The idea of migraine hypnosis might seem like a contradiction in terms. How does your subconscious affect the physical nature of your body? How does the mind control pain? Often a common over the counter pill does the trick when it comes to headaches. Migraines, however, are much more than a mere headache.

Migraines are incapacitating, as anyone who has ever suffered from one will tell you. There are medications and other forms of treatment for migraines but even with these options, some people are out of commission days due to this dreadful headache. To understand why hypnosis is one of the most successful treatments for migraines it is helpful to understand the nature of migraines.

Migraine headaches are very often brought on by a restriction in blood flow to the brain. Migraines are also triggered by changes in your body that can be set off by stress, medications, certain foods, poor sleep patterns, and other factors that vary from individual to individual. The symptoms include debilitating pain as well as nausea and vomiting which may be the body’s reaction to the pain that seems to throb throughout the entire body. Light can also negatively affect migraine sufferers and they often need to lie still in the dark to alleviate the discomfort.

Imagine…..

A life free of migraine headaches

Not having to use prescription drugs, that in some cases, have side effects

No longer being sidelined whenever you feel a headache coming on

Since migraines can last for days and since they often seem impervious to pain medications, it is imperative that a faster and more effective treatment be utilized. Migraine hypnosis has been studied and shown to be highly effective – more than three times the people treated with hypnosis stopped having migraines than those who stopped having migraines after being given the prescription medication prochlorperazine.

Basically it covers the painful side effects of a migraine. Speaking of side effects, the side effects of prochlorperazine include body and facial tics.

Migraine headache treatment Hypnosis on the other hand does not have side effects and is also much easier on your body than any heavy-duty medications. Scientific Data

There are a number of studies and scientific data that demonstrate the effectiveness of addressing migraines with hypnosis. There is compelling data that goes back many years that support the use of hypnosis for a variety of uses in relation to pain management.

In 1992, Gutfeld and Rao led a study with individuals that had experienced migraines and did not feel relief with the more traditional treatment methods. They explored the use of hypnotherapy, dividing the participants into two groups. One was given hypnotherapy while the other served as a point of comparison to determine effectiveness. The results showed a 30% decrease in how often they suffered from migraines and how painful they were. Given that other methods did not work for these patients, a 30% reduction was considered significant according to Dr. Spierings, Ph.D director within the neurology department at Brigham and Women’s hospital.

Going back to 1975, a study was performed for migraine sufferers utilizing hypnosis. There was an initial study and then a follow up six months later so a one year study in total. Anderson found that hypnosis treatment had a significant impact. There was a significant decrease in intensity as well as frequency in comparison to the control group. In fact, those without any migraines for a three month period was much higher as well.

Hypnosis for Children with Migraines

In 1987, there was a study focused on children from age six to twelve to understand how self-hypnosis works with children dealing with migraines. Children are typically very receptive to hypnosis. They are very open and don’t carry any preconceived notions about the process. Olness determined that self-hypnosis was much more successful in decreasing the number of migraines in comparison to the use of a migraine medication called propranolol as well as compared to a placebo effect.

Data on Hypnosis

While researching the data on hypnosis, Alladin found a number of hypnosis methods that were widely used in treating migraine sufferers. Amongst them was an emphasis on relaxation techniques, suggestions during hypnosis sessions affecting how long migraines last and how painful they are. Alladin looked at a ten weeks of treatment and then a comparison over a year later with the participants. The conclusion was consistent which showed a decrease in amount, how intense they were how long they lasted.

There is a considerable amount of data and research that support the application of hypnosis to treat migraine sufferers. These studies have compared the effects with other more traditional forms of treatment for adults and children. The concentration in some instances were to identify participants that tried other methods without success. Hypnosis for migraines is something to seriously consider for those that are looking for natural alternatives to treat their chronic migraines.
